NexusSIM: Empowering Research for the Public Good

Introduction

The Center for Mind and Culture (CMAC) offers nexusSIM, a consulting service that propels public-interest research forward by connecting academic researchers with computational and data-science expertise.

What is NexusSIM?

NexusSIM delivers CMAC’s capabilities to research projects with prosocial impact. We bridge the gap between researchers in social sciences, public health, arts, and humanities and experts in computational methods. Our team collaborates with clients to provide customized, timely, and affordable solutions that transform data and ideas into impactful contributions.

Our Services

NexusSIM provides expertise in:

  • Data Analytics: Correlational analysis, principal component analysis, regression analysis, machine learning, natural language processing, and development of data dashboards and exploration tools.
  • Modeling & Simulation: Comprehensive support through all stages of model development, from specification to analysis of simulation outputs, with particular expertise in agent-based models (ABMs).

What Makes NexusSIM Different?

NexusSIM stands out through:

  1. Software Engineering Standards: Unlike typical academic research, we implement project management tools, coding readability standards, and unit testing to enhance research quality.
  2. Interdisciplinary Approach: We facilitate collaboration between humanities scholars, scientists, and experts in computational simulation and data science, providing unique insights and technical expertise.

Examples of Our Work

  • Public Health Research: We helped University of Utah researcher Brenda Heaton simulate the effects of dental health care interventions on caregiver behaviors, providing deeper understanding of how to improve children’s dental health outcomes.
  • Violence Prevention: We partnered with Boston University researcher Jonathan Jay to study firearms violence interventions. By adapting existing models and integrating diverse datasets, our simulations extrapolated the long-term impacts of these interventions, accounting for demographic, geographic, and social network factors.
